Natural Perfumery

Natural perfumery refers to making perfume without using synthetic aroma materials. Natural perfumes are mainly created
from plant materials called essential oils and absolutes. These include fruits, flowers, herbs, resins, woods, seeds, roots.

Often these essences are termed "the life force, or soul" of the plant. Scientific scent research is showing that each plant oil has its own particular fragrance which in turn can affect our mood and emotions. Some essences are energizing, uplifting, inspiring. Others can be calming, soothing, grounding and still others have aphrodisiac properties. Perfumes made from synthetic chemicals do not have these same 'alive' qualities.

Synthetics can approximate the dominant qualities of the natural essences, but they cannot capture the same subtlety or softness, nor can they mimic the way natural perfumes evolve on the skin, uniquely in response to body chemistry.

Borrowing from music terminology, perfumes are composed through combining notes and chords. Every perfume is created from Top, Middle and Base Notes.

Top or Head Notes are what we smell first and they introduce the perfume, drawing us in to the fragrance, forming the scent's initial impression and quickly dissipating. They are ethereal and fleeting and soon give way to the Middle Notes. These are the personality or "heart" of the perfume. They eventually fade into the Base Notes which are deep, earthy and mysterious and linger the longest on the skin.
